Hudson Entertainment opgeheven

Hudson is één van de bekendste studios in de game-industrie, en die roem heeft het te danken aan games als Bomberman, Adventure Island en het recent uitgegeven, maar lauw ontvangen, A Shadow’s Tale. Hudson Entertainment’s produkt- en merkmanager Morgan Haro heeft in een blogpost kenbaar gemaakt dat de Amerikaanse studio, verantwoordelijk voor de laatstgenoemde titel, wordt opgeheven. Een treurige dag in de geschiedenis van videospellen.

De studio was voornamelijk verantwoordelijk voor het overbrengen van Japanse titels naar het westen. Onlangs heeft Konami de studio opgekocht en heeft dus gisteren besloten om de studio te sluiten. Alle projecten waar Hudson mee bezig was, worden geschrapt. Het merk Hudson blijft echter wel bestaan, maar dan alleen in Japan. Ook wordt de aandacht verschoven van console games naar social media games. De games die eerder onder Hudsons vlag voeren, worden waarschijnlijk in hun geheel overgenomen door Konami.

Hoewel het treurig is om te zien dat zo’n old-school studio als Hudson wordt opgeheven, is de context waarin Haro zijn blogpost heeft gezet interessant. Hij geeft namelijk het volgende aan.

“As the industry continues to march towards the drum of Western game development, Hudson became for me a symbol of why Japan has fallen behind when it comes to bringing world-wide hits to gamers.”

Dan nu nog de laatste woorden van Morgan Haro over zijn geliefde studio.

“The only thing I can say is that Hudson Entertainment was a great company with some amazing people behind the scenes. As a fan of Japanese game companies in general, I hope to see more collaboration and more communication between Japan and their US counterparts in the development of titles regardless of whether they’re for core, casual, or social games. It can only lead to greater things all around! We all strove for it, and as we made more progress, Hudson Japan was very receptive to our ideas; but unfortunately, looks like our time was limited to improve those processes. At the end of the day though, there were some amazingly awesome people on both sides of the Pacific, and I hope to see great things from the Hudson group going forward.”
