Nieuw armor-systeem in Skyrim

Matt Carafano van Bethesda heeft wat details vrijgegeven over het nieuwe armor-systeem in Skyrim. Na maanden speculatie heeft Matt Carafano, de Lead Artist van The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, eindelijk bevestigd dat het armor-systeem in Skyrim anders zal zijn dan in de voorgaande delen van The Elder Scrolls.

The armor system is very similar to Oblivion’s. The main difference is that the upper and lower body armors, the cuirass and greaves, have been combined into one piece. This helps create armor styles that have the look we needed for Skyrim. In most of the Nordic designs we created, the upper armor would completely cover the lower armor, making it unnecessary. We get much better visual results combining those pieces, and it renders a lot faster too, so we can put more people on screen, so that was an easy tradeoff for us. We can also make a lot more armors now, so the number and variation types are more than we’ve ever had.
In the previous Elder Scrolls games, we could see a reduction in the complexity of the armor system and as it seems, Skyrim is going to combine cuirass, greaves and pauldrons into one entinty named Armor.

Dit kan ook slecht nieuws betekenen voor een aantal Skyrim-fans omdat het unieke gevoel dat je krijgt bij het verzamelen van specifieke delen van een armor nu verloren gaat en je minder enchantment slots zal hebben. Bruce Nesmith daarentegen heeft wat details over de crafting-mogelijkheden vrijgegeven die de fans toch nog wel gelukkig kan maken.

The blacksmith’s shop includes a forge, a grindstone, and a smithing bench. You can improve your weapons at the grindstone. The higher your skill, the more you can improve them, and the more damage they’ll do. Same thing for armor with the smithing bench, only the armor rating gets better. The forge is actually used to create new weapons and armor from raw materials.

Als dit betekent dat mensen nu zelf armors kunnen craften in de wereld van Skyrim is het nieuwe armor-systeem misschien toch niet zo,n heel slecht idee.
